Method Return Types in Java

A return type from a method can be of any data type, either an object or a simple type. The method can also return void which means that it returns nothing.

These examples illustrate return types:

    //This method returns an int
    public int method1() {

        int i;

        //...

        return i;
    }

    //This method returns an object of type Vector
    public Vector method2() {

        Vector v = new Vector();

        //...

        return v;
    }

    //This method returns nothing
    public void method3() {

    }
