How to calculate the area of a rectangle
This example shows how to calculate the area of a rectangle. First we ask the user for the width and height of the rectangle. The input is parsed to integer values and finally we calculate the area of the rectangle using the correct formula. |
import java.io.BufferedReader; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.InputStreamReader; /** * * @author javadb.com */ public class Main { /** * Calculates the rectangle area */ public static void main(String[] args) { int width = 0; int length = 0; BufferedReader reader = null; try { reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); //get the width and height of the rectangle from the user System.out.println("Please enter length of a rectangle"); length = Integer.parseInt(reader.readLine()); System.out.println("Please enter width of a rectangle"); width = Integer.parseInt(reader.readLine()); } catch (NumberFormatException nfe) { nfe.printStackTrace(); System.exit(0); } catch (IOException ioe) { ioe.printStackTrace(); System.exit(0); } finally { try { reader.close(); } catch (IOException ioe) { ioe.printStackTrace(); } } int area = length * width; System.out.println("The rectangle area is " + area); } } |
